Joseph Cardinal Höffner is one of the most important theologians of the 20th century. On December 24, 1906 he was born in Horhausen / Westerwald. He studied at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome. There he became a doctor of philosophy in 1929 and a doctor of theology in 1934. By 1940 he obtained two more doctorates. In 1962 he became Bishop of Münster, 1969 Archbishop of Cologne and cardinal in the same year. He was one of the co-founders of Christian social science in Germany and was from 1976 Chairman of the German Bishops' Conference. Joseph Cardinal Höffner died on 16 October 1987 in Cologne. Since 2003, Höffner has been honored in the Israeli Yad Vashem Memorial as "Righteous Among the Nations". During the National Socialist dictatorship he had hidden a Jewish girl and thus saved her from being deported to a concentration camp.
