Georg Elser is today considered one of the most consistent opponents of the Nazi dictatorship. He was born on January 4, 1903 in Hermaringen in Württemberg. From 1936 to 1939 Elser was employed as a laborer in a Heidenheimer armature factory and learned there of the armaments production on behalf of the national socialists. In 1938 he made the decision to kill Adolf Hitler by assassination and to prevent a looming war. In the first days of November 1939 Elser built the bomb into a hollowed-out column in the Bürgerbräukeller. On the evening of November 8, the bomb detonated as planned. Hitler had left the hall just minutes before the explosion. Georg Elser was arrested while attempting to escape to Switzerland. After days of interrogation, he confessed his act. A few weeks before the end of the war, he was shot dead on 9 April 1945 in the Dachau concentration camp.
