The physician, Protestant theologian, cultural philosopher and musician Albert Schweitzer was born on January 14, 1875 in Kaysersberg in Alsace. He died on September 4, 1965 in Lambarene, Africa. In 1899 he became assistant pastor at St. Nicolai in Strasbourg, since 1902 at the same time Privatdozent. In 1913 he founded a tropical hospital in Lambarene as a missionary doctor - he had begun his medical studies in 1905 - and sought to finance it with lecture tours and organ concerts in his homeland and literary work. After his internment in Europe in 1917, he returned to Lambarene in 1924 and worked there until his death in the newly built since 1927, larger hospital. In 1951 he was awarded the Peace Prize of the German Book Trade, 1952 the Nobel Peace Prize, 1954 the Order of the Peace Class of the "Pour le mérite". His life's work and his thoughts are continued by various free associations.
