Lorenz Böhler, founder of accident surgery, was born in 1885 and comes from Wolfurt in Vorarlberg. In 1905 he began to study medicine in Vienna. Particularly important for his development were the experiences he gained as a military doctor in the military hospital of Bolzano during the First World War. When he becomes the head of this light-injured hospital in 1916, he begins reorganizing it. Due to its great successes in the treatment of severe gunshot wounds, this medical care facility will be converted to a "special department for bone fractures and articular shots" in the fall of the same year. His work there during the war is described a year later in a qualification description as groundbreaking. After the end of the war Böhler was able to convince the board of the workers' compensation insurance that the expenses of the asylum could be substantially reduced by the planned, appropriate treatment of fresh injuries. He therefore called for the establishment of an appropriate hospital and the possibility of a scientific expansion of its treatment methods. In 1925 the first accident hospital in Vienna was created, whose first director and director was Böhler until 1963. This was followed by the newly built "Trauma Hospital Lorenz Böhler", which was opened in November 1972. Lorenz Böhler died on January 20, 1973.
