Oswald Redlich was born on 17 September 1858 in Innsbruck. In the fall of 1876 he began his studies at the university, where he was particularly enthusiastic about history. In 1879 he was admitted to the Institute for Austrian Historical Research in Vienna. Both educational institutions, in Innsbruck and in Vienna, should subsequently be influential for their scientific understanding. In 1881 Redlich became a civil servant at the Lieutenancy of the Lieutenancy in Innsbruck. In 1887 he habilitated as a Privatdozent at the University of Innsbruck. From 1892 to 1928 he was a professor at the University of Vienna, 1908/09 he held the post of dean of the faculty of philosophy, 1911/12 the rector of the University of Vienna. He was also a member of the Academy of Sciences and from 1919 to 1938 its president. He founded the doctrine of the private customers of the Middle Ages and has documented especially in his great work "Rudolf von Habsburg" the Austrian, German and European history of the second half of the 13th century scientifically, with an impressive source basis. In addition, especially his publications in two volumes on the heroic age of Austria, from 1685 to 1740, should be emphasized. Dr. Oswald Redlich, who died on January 20, 1944, can be described as one of the most important and well-known historians in Austria.
