On this motif of a special issue of August 24, 1949, for the centenary of the struggle for the city of Rastatt, one of the leaders of the revolution of 1848, Carl Schurz, is depicted. Schulz, born in Liblar near Cologne on 2 March 1829, joined the revolutionary freedom movement in 1848. One of the highlights of the national uprising is the battle for the federal stronghold Rastatt, which occupied some 5,000 revolutionaries. Before the conquest by Prussian troops succeeded Schurz, one of the commanders, in 1849 the flight to Switzerland. He then worked as a journalist in France and England. Nchdem emigrated to America in 1852 and had joined the Republicans in 1854, he was from 1869 to 1875 federal senator in Missouri and from 1877 to 1881 Minister of the Interior of the United States. On May 14, 1906 Carl Schurz died in New York as a pioneer of German-American relations and hero in the struggle for freedom in Germany.
