Born in Spalato (Dalmatia) on April 18, 1819, Franz von Suppé is regarded as the ancestor and first successful composer of the Viennese operetta, whose "Golden Age" he pioneered. His work includes 31 operettas. The best known are "The Beautiful Galathee" (1865), "Fatinitza" (1876) and especially "Boccaccio" (1879). In addition, he created the music as an experienced bandmaster to over 200 stage works. Franz von Suppé died on May 21, 1895 in Vienna. A small museum in his Sophien villa in Gars am Kamp reminds him and his work.
