Johann Josef Loschmidt was born on March 15, 1821 in Putschirn, today Pocerny, a village near Karlovy Vary / Czech Republic as the eldest of four children. His achievements in the field of basic research in chemistry and physics established his membership in the Vienna Academy of Sciences. His first scientific feat, in 1861, concerned the constitution of benzene. In 1865 he became famous in his circle of physicists for his publication "The Size of Air Molecules". He calculated in it the diameter of such a molecule to a millionth of a millimeter. The brilliant scientist died at the age of 74, on July 8, 1895.
