The architect of the new town hall on Vienna's Ringstraße was born on October 22, 1825 in Frickenhofen, Württemberg, as the son of a pastor. As a representative of the Gothic Revival, the Austrian Minister of Culture and Education, Leo Graf Thun-Hohenstein, brought him to Vienna in 1859, where he was appointed Professor of Medieval Art at the Vienna Academy on October 11 of the same year. Already in the years prior to his appointment to Vienna, Schmidt had acquired considerable experience in the field of the restoration of sacral monuments from the Rhineland and Italy. Therefore, he was in 1860 a member of the Construction Commission St. Stephen and 1863 appointed master builder. The creator of numerous religious buildings died on 23 January 1891 in Vienna.
