Lower Austria: The celebrations for the 1000th anniversary of Austria in 1976 related to the transfer of the former margraviate by Emperor Otto II to the Babenberg Leopold I. With this year began the continuous political development of historic Austria. The Austrian Post and Telegraph Administration issued the present commemorative block on this occasion. He represents all nine Austrian states and shows their respective coat of arms on nine different brands. Lower Austria is the largest state in Austria. In Roman times, the land south of the Danube belonged to the provinces of Noricum and Pannonia. North of the Danube, the Teutons lived. After the migration of peoples, the country was populated by the Slavs. The West belonged at times to the Bavarian tribal area. By the Awarenkriege Charlemagne the land came to the Frankish kingdom. After the collapse of the Bavarian reign (907), the area came under Hungarian influence. Only after the battle on the Lechfeld (955) was it possible to erect a marquee here, which fell to the Babenbergs in 976. The margraviate was raised to duchy in 1156 and arrived in 1282 to the Habsburgs. The coat of arms was established in 1920. Vienna became its own state in 1922, but Lower Austria's state government remained in Vienna. Since 1975, Sankt Pölten has been Lower Austria's new capital. The coat of arms shows in a shield five golden eagles, on the top carries the shield a golden wall crown with three battlements.
