The bird sanctuary Seebach near Mühlhausen in Thuringia is the oldest national bird sanctuary in Germany. It serves as a home for sick and dependent birds and as a breeding ground for many species of birds. The facility is housed in a 12th-century moated castle with falcons, owls, jackdaws and other bird species nesting in its walls. The emergence of the conservatory dates back to Hans Freiherr von Berlepsch, who in 1884 set up a »pilot station for bird protection«. Their state recognition by the Prussian state government on April 1, 1908 was a significant step in the history of ornithology. Today, the facility, which includes a two-hectare park, attracts thousands of visitors each year.
