In 1908, the first powered flight in Germany started with a self-constructed aircraft. Hans Grade, born on 17 May 1879, completed flights of several hundred meters in length. His triplane consisted of steel pipes and bamboo poles covered with canvas. The aircraft had a 6-cylinder two-stroke engine with a power of 26,6kW (36 hp) and weighed 150 kilograms. At the end of October 1908, Grade began with first flight tests on the Cracauer Anger in Magdeburg. The plane flew only straight ahead. The problem of control was solved later. This pioneering work by Hans Grades, who died on October 22, 1946, ushered in the beginnings of German aircraft construction.
