On August 11, 1901, the German polar research vessel Gauss launched the first German South Polar Expedition. On November 24, 1903, the expedition team returned to Kiel safely and successfully. The scientific results of the expedition can be found in 20 volumes and two atlases. Germany created in 1982 with the supply ship "Polarstern" the necessary for a long-term scientific engagement in the polar regions. The ship was launched in 1982 and is considered to be one of the most powerful polar exploration vessels in the world with 33 expeditions so far. Owner is the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, operator is the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research.
