The railway line Garmisch-Partenkirchen - Mittenwald - Seefeld - Innsbruck, also known as the Karwendel or Mittenwaldbahn, celebrated its 100th anniversary last year. A special stamp commemorated the opening of this line, which took place in 1912. A year later, as a replacement for the efforts to realize the long-distance railway, the connection Garmisch-Partenkirchen - Ehrwald- Zugspitzbahn - Lermoos - Reutte, initially titled "Mittenwaldbahn II", de facto as a continuation of the local railway Schönbichl-Reutte AG on the one hand or as a closing between Werdenfelser Land and Außerfern on the other hand. The first ideas for the construction of the Außerfernbahn date back to the year 1843, during which many different projects emerged during the following decades. Their realizations failed, however, because of different political views, economic interests or armed conflicts. The construction of the Außerfernbahn has not been recorded on the Tyrolean side, but in Bavaria the construction of the first buildings began in July 1911. The opening was finally on May 29, 1913. The route chosen at that time meant for the scenic Außerfernbahn always a shadowy existence. The long journey times to Innsbruck and the simultaneous expansion of the road network kept floating over the Außerfernbahn again and again a sword Damocles. In the year 2000, the situation became more acute: ÖBB Personenverkehr wanted to completely discontinue operations; at the same time, the renewal of the overhead contact line between Garmisch-Partenkirchen and the state border near Griesen was under way. The line was practically over the coast, but could be rescued by intensive efforts of railway workers on site, the ÖBB infrastructure, the state of Tyrol and the cement producer "Schretter & Cie.", Who agreed to transport large quantities of goods by rail , With the transfer of passenger traffic in January 2001, initially with five pairs of trains between Reutte and Ehrwald-Zugspitzbahn, at least the settlement of the ever-popular "Snow Express" could be ensured. This first foreign order to DB Regio Upper Bavaria resulted in the consequence to the total transfer of the local traffic on the rail to the German course AG, which will continue to use new sets on a completely renewed infrastructure in Tyrol and along the Außerfernbahn with continuation of the new traffic service contract starting from December 2013. The brand motif shows an old train set with an electric locomotive of the Reichsbahn E62 series as a railcar. Interestingly, this was the first German electric locomotive with electric train heating.
