At the beginning of the "local train" from Arnoldstein to Hermagor was the Arnoldstein factory owner Felix von Mottony. He and several interested parties obtained the construction of the economically necessary railway. After several years of planning and construction, the grand opening took place on August 11, 1894, and on the same day the train was opened in 2555 with 310 passengers. The railway had a length of 30.56 km from the exit change in the station Arnoldstein to its end point in Hermagor. Of the engineering structures, the Gail Bridge with a width of 60 m is especially worth mentioning. Since the summer of 1993, the Gailtalbahn is operated as a "Zugleitstrecke".
