Devastating floods across the Alpine Rhine shaped the history of the Austrian-Swiss Rhine Valley until 1890. The increasing population demanded effective flood control and after decades of negotiations, a treaty between Austria and Switzerland came to an end Rhine regulation launched. His goal was to shorten the course of the Rhine by 10 km through the foot and Diepoldsauer Durchstich. Many other regulatory measures were needed to achieve today's state of flood protection. This development can not yet be considered complete with an outlook on the planned power plants on Alpenrhein and Ill.
