The reorganization of the imperial collections by Franz Josef I was the impetus for the establishment of the Kunsthistorisches Museum and the Naturhistorisches Museum, which are regarded as jewels of the Ringstrasse architecture. Between 1871 and 1877, the two buildings were built in the shell, after they had decided on a project by the architect Karl Hasenauer. But only the revision of the project by Gottfried von Semper gave the Kunsthistorisches Museum the solemn atmosphere that is so valued today. The interior design, which began in 1880, was Hasenauer's original work, which did not have to pay any attention to it, and therefore created a splendid backdrop for the objects of the collections using the most expensive materials. After more than two decades of planning and construction, the Kunsthistorisches Museum was officially opened on 17 October 1891 by the Emperor.
