On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the French Revolution of 1789, gathered from 14 to 20 July 1889 also to the 400 delegates of the then young workers' movement from America and Europe in Paris. Her main concern was issues of worker protection and the eight-hour day. As part of their deliberations, they declared May 1, 1890 the day of action for the eight-hour day and the social and political concerns of the working class. The Austrian delegation voted in favor. Since then, May Day has been celebrated as a feast day with work rest in order to demonstrate key concerns of social democracy. Finally, on April 25, 1919, the Austrian National Council also made the 1st of May by law a day of rest and festivity.
