Already in 1832 the horse-drawn railway from Linz to Budweis had been opened in the Mühlviertel. This plant was soon outdated by the development of the large steam trains. Thus, after many delays, on June 6, 1885 started the construction of the Mühlkreisbahn. At the same time, the Lokomotivfabrik Kraus & Co in Linz commenced the production of five locomotives, which, as was customary at that time, led to the production of ships after their completion. They left "Linz", "Urfahr", "Neufelden", "Rohrbach" and "Aigen". The ceremonial opening trip took place on 17 October 1888. At that time, two special trains with passengers drove from the Urfahr station to the Mühlviertel, thereby initiating a new era of traffic technology for this region. The opening of the Linz-Urfahr connecting line on November 14, 1900 was another important step in this direction. Because the Mühlkreisbahn was and is a main lifeline for the economic development of the Mühlviertel.
