With increasing expansion of the settlement area, the struggle of humans against the forces of nature became harder and harder. Already in antiquity, the ancient Greeks built walls along the torrent Kladaos to protect the city of Olympia from flooding. In the area of the former Austrian monarchy, protective structures can be traced back to the 13th century as a safeguard against wild waters. The disasters of 1882 were indirect triggers for the founding of the Austrian torrent. Heavy storms in the first half of this year revealed the need for systematic work to protect against these natural disasters. In 1883, for example, a bill was introduced in the Austrian Parliament for the "harmless discharge of mountain water" and finally passed on 30 June. By a decree of the Ministry of Agriculture of June 5, 1884 finally came the "k.k. forestry department for torrent engineering" to life. Today, the tasks of torrent containment comprise numerous individual activities involving nearly 5,000 torrents and over 4,000 avalanches, which are registered as harmful in Austria. The brand image shows the prevention of the depth of field by locks in a torrent.
