On October 9, 1874, the "Allgemeine Postverein" was founded in Bern by 22 European states, including Austria. The contracting countries formed a single postal area. For the time being, the treaties were limited to the regulation of the international exchange of letter mail. Four years later in Paris, the name was changed to "Universal Postal Union" and decided to meet each other every five years to congresses, to adapt the Universal Postal Convention to the respective level of development in the technical, economic and social field. In the last 100 years, the Universal Postal Union has proved that direct international cooperation in subject areas was possible and blessing for all mankind despite wars and numerous conflicts. The brand image on the occasion of the anniversary shows an Austrian Landbrief carrier from the time one hundred years ago. This service had been introduced in 1873. The Landbriefträger wore at that time still no uniforms, but received a cap from "carrot-gray" cloth, a service shield, a iron-beaten stick and a lockable leather bag. If you look closely, you can clearly notice a backpack over the shoulders. The transport car of the present corresponds to the two-wheeled "Carriolwagen", which pulls a horse in the Gabeldeichsel.
