The Viennese racecourse Freudenau is celebrating the centenary of its centenary this year. But the horse racing in Vienna is demonstrably already occupied from 1382 to 1529. The Turkish wars brought Arabian horses to Vienna, three of which came to England and formed the basis for the world-famous thoroughbred breeding on the island. These horses are characterized above all by speed and hardness and were imported in the beginning of the last century in large numbers from England to Vienna, which gave rise to the idea to establish an Austrian jockey club after English model. This happened on April 9, 1867, and he prepared immediately for the first Austrian Derby. The traditional derby rules state that the race is run over the distance of 1.5 miles (2,400 meters) and is reserved only for horses of the same age so as to find the truly best of a vintage. The Derby took place for the first time on May 21, 1868 in the Freudenau and quickly became a center of social life. The races were held to almost constant extent until 1944 and resumed in 1946 on a smaller scale. The brand image shows two thoroughbreds with jockeys in the race.
