The beginnings of the Austrian postal system go back to Emperor Franz Josef, who set up a department for post and telegraph affairs at the Ministry of Trade and Economics on March 5, 1866. During this time the post office was subject to strong changes. Thus, technical innovations made it possible for the Post to offer new services over and over again. An example: 1837/38, the railway began to drive in Austria. Thus, the carriage of letters could be accelerated significantly, and so reversed from 1850 railway mail cars. The telegraphy was expanded. But one of the great achievements of the new central office was to introduce correspondence cards in Austria as the first state in the world. The correspondence increased considerably. In further steps postcards and finally picture postcards were introduced. The latter were sent around the world shortly after their introduction in millions of copies. Postal delivery in villages, postal parcel delivery, the founding of the Postal Savings Bank with the establishment of postal checks, the introduction of post buses, airmail and the establishment of the telephone company are just a few landmarks in the 100-year history. Radio relay systems and automatic remote dialing are achievements of the present. The brand image shows a view of the building in Postgasse with a depiction of the postal coat of arms of the Second Republic.
