On the morning of October 26, 1863, the Swiss General Guillaume-Henrie Dufour, the president of the "Geneva Charitable Society" Gustave Moynier, went to the doctors. Luis Appia and Theodor Maunoir and the young Geneva businessman Henri Dunant in the Geneva Athenaeum, where they expected the representatives of 17 states. When they left the conference hall, the foundation stone was laid for the "Red Cross". As a result, Red Cross Societies were founded in numerous countries at the initiative of this Congress. As early as 1864, such societies emerged in the various German states, in Belgium, Spain, Italy and France. 1865 in Portugal, Sweden and Norway, 1866 in Switzerland, 1867 in the Netherlands and in Austria, 1877 in Finland, Greece, Japan and Turkey, 1879 in Peru and Hungary. In 1963 there were already 90 national societies of the Red Cross, the Red Crescent (in the Islamic countries) and the Red Lion and the Sun (in Iran), which had 157 million members. Especially after the First and Second World War, the achievements of the International Red Cross were an essential element of the reconciliation of peoples.
