The chemist and industrialist Alfred Nobel was born on October 21, 1833 in Stockholm. Thanks to his inventions and patents, within a few decades he managed to found an international empire with industrial facilities. Alfred Nobel died on December 10, 1896 in Italy. His will was a sensation: the bulk of his immense fortune was to go to a fund that would award prizes to those who "bestowed the greatest benefit to mankind in the past year." On December 10, 1901, the prizes were awarded for the first time. Alfred Nobel's Testament of 1895 has gained significance for almost a century by paying attention to and promoting work in the fields of science and culture as well as peace work.
