As the largest provider of further education in Germany, adult education centers work nationwide and provide a unique variety of programs. For 100 years, adult education has been an integral part of the public education system. Nevertheless, one of the main characteristics of adult education centers is that they act at the local level and that participation is voluntary. The doors are open to anyone - but especially the socially disadvantaged. It is also possible to catch up on school and educational qualifications at more than 900 institutions nationwide. Although the beginnings of adult education go back further, the decisive preconditions for realizing the bourgeois concept were only given in the Weimar Republic. Legally stipulated in Article 148 of the Reich Constitution of 1919, the further education was from now on in public responsibility and the promotion of the adult education centers in state hands. In those years, adult schools developed their essential traits, which are still influential today.
