Forerunners of the postal codes in Germany were the ring number stamps of the Thurn and Taxis Post used since 1853. Over the decades, finer alphanumeric systems have developed for faster mail delivery. The Federal Republic of Germany and the GDR introduced four-digit postal code systems on 1 November 1961 and 1 January 1965, respectively. With the reunification on 3 October 1990 a common postal area developed. Over 800 cities in East and West had the same postal codes. As a result, the five-digit postal codes were introduced on 1 July 1993. The first two digits indicate the destination region, the third to fifth digits indicate the place of residence of the customer, whether he receives his mail by delivery or post office box and whether he is a major customer.
