Orienteering is a relatively new sport in the German Democratic Republic. While in the traditional countries this sport was already practiced around the turn of the century, in the German Democratic Republic it only became indigenous after 1945. In orienteering the competitor has to cover a maximum distance of 9 km as the crow flies and in the men's race a distance of 16 km as the crow flies, according to a competition card which he receives at the start. He has to call certain, marked on the map checkpoints. To solve his task, he uses a sports compass. The omission of a checkpoint affects the placement in the competition. It is therefore important that the runner in addition to a good athletic training has excellent knowledge in dealing with map and compass. Only both properties together form the prerequisite for a successful performance. The World Championships will be held as singles and relay races for men and women. The women's relay three and the men's relay four competitors. After the first runner, all other competitors can only go on the track when the previous competitor has finished his run. The motifs for the two special postage stamps of Deutsche Post come from the orienteering race. For both stamps, a section of a competition card was used as fund. The 10 penny value also shows a sports compass with its 360 degree graduation to determine marching number. Furthermore, a magnifying glass for better map reading, a pedometer, a centimeter measure and a scale 1: 25,000 can be seen.
