Pope John Paul II's visit to the Federal Republic of Germany from April 30 to May 4, 1987 and the 17th Marian and the Tenth International Mariological Congress in Kevelaer from September 11 to 20, 1987 From April 30 to May 4, 1987, Pope John Paul II in the Federal Republic of Germany. He visits the archdiocese of Cologne and Munich-Freising and the dioceses of Augsburg, Essen, Münster and Speyer. The Pope's visit is of great pastoral importance and an important event not only for the archdiocese and dioceses visited. The focus is on the witness to the faith. Special highlights of the dense, rich in highlights visit program are the beatifications of Sister Teresa Benedicta a cruce OCarm (Edith Stein) and Father Rupert Mayer SJ, the Pope John Paul II on 1 May in Cologne and on 3 May in Munich in the A Eucharistic celebration. He honors two people who - as well as the Cardinal von Galen, whose grave the Pope will visit in the Cathedral of Münster - during the time of National Socialism have excellently distinguished themselves as witnesses of the faith. One of the places that Pope John Paul II will visit on his journey is the Marian shrine Kevelaer. From 11 to 20 September 1987, the 17th Marian and the 10th Mariological World Congress will take place in this Lower Rhine town. The Marian and Mariological Congresses are held every four years by the Pontificia Academia Mariana Internationalis (PAMI), which is based in Rome, in a different country. Due to the different topics to which each congress is dedicated and the respective venues, each congress has its own character. Although the orientation of the Marian and Mariological Congresses is different, they are conducted in temporal and local context. The Marian Congresses serve to promote and deepen piety, especially Marian popular piety. They address the faithful with religious and cultural offerings and events. In contrast, the Mariological Congresses have a scientific character. They offer scholars of various disciplines, such as theologians, historians and sociologists, the opportunity to discuss questions of Mariology and to contribute to mariological studies and research. In particular, the ecumenical conversation is promoted. The leitmotif in Kevelaer over both congresses should read: "Maria mater fidelium - Maria Mutter der Belaubenden".
