Starting from Waldmüller, trained in Rahl and Kaulbach, in thoughtful engagement with the time influences of European realism, German and French Impressionism, Romako becomes an unconscious precursor of Expressionism on the bridge between Impressionism and Neo-Romanticism. Characteristic is his propensity for the fantastic, which was later adopted by Gustav Klimt, albeit with different signs of sentiment. Romako painted landscapes. The sketch "The Gastein Valley" became famous. In addition to charming Impressionist genre pictures, he created reproductions of current events, such as the excellent painting "Tegetthoff in the Battle of Lissa". He preferred peculiar shades, such as a delicate poison green. His pictures were always a discovery of psychic realms. Romako's brushwork is agile, nervous, sometimes almost hectic in life.
