Andreas Hermes was born on 16 July 1878 in Mönchengladbach. From March 1920 to March 1922 he headed the Reich Ministry of Food and Agriculture. From October 1921 to August 1923 also the Reich Ministry of Finance. As a member of the Center Party he belonged to the Prussian Landtag (1924 to 1928) and the Reichstag (1928 to 1933). As a critic of National Socialism, he was first arrested on March 21, 1933. After the Hitler attack on July 20, 1944 he was sentenced to death because of his membership in resistance circles. His wife has repeatedly postponed the execution of the sentence. Thus, Hermes survived the Second World War. In 1945 he was co-founder of the CDU and from 1947 to 1954 president of the German Farmers Association. Andreas Hermes died on 4 January 1964 in Krälingen.
