Every now and then we are lucky enough to witness an extraordinary natural spectacle. Great amazement, especially in the sky, causes phenomena to be observed, which are often caused by light refraction. Rainbows, for example, enchant us with their magnificent colors. The effect occurs when, during or shortly after a shower, sun rays penetrate into the drops and are thereby broken. Then they are reflected on the inner rear wall and refracted again on exit. The white sunlight is split up into its color components like a prism and deflected differently - red least, violets the strongest. Very large raindrops cause particularly bright rainbows with well-defined, intense colors. From the surface of the earth, we see a colorful arc in the sky, which is actually a circle. To perceive it in its entirety, however, is only possible from a lofty height, for example from an airplane. Conversely, the rainbow is invisible when viewed from the ground, when the sun is more than 41 degrees high in the sky, because it actually disappears below the horizon. Because of this, no rainbow will ever be seen at summer lunchtime, even during heavy thunderstorms. For example, if the water front is not closed, caused for example by a fountain, only parts of a rainbow are visible. Such fragments also arise when the rain falls locally, as can be seen on one of the special postage stamps of the new series "Himmelsereignisse". The corresponding photograph was taken on the Zugspitze with a view of the Hochwanner, the second largest mountain in Germany. If you want to find the notorious gold treasure, which according to an Irish legend is said to be buried at the end of the rainbow, you will have even worse maps on such a fragmented specimen, but will be rewarded with a breathtaking sight.
