The theme of this year's edition of the special postage stamp series "Europa", which is themed "Native Birds", is the widespread Yellowhammer (Emberiza citrinella), which is considered to be a typical companion of the Feldmark and the "Bird of the Year" in 1999. was chosen. The passerine-like songbird can easily be recognized by its plumage - especially during the mating season, the head and chest of the male light up intensely yellow, while the elytra have rust-brown stripes. Females and young birds are inconspicuously greenish yellow in color and overall more heavily striped. Characteristic for both sexes is the cinnamon brown rump. "How, how, how do I love you," it sounds from February until well into the autumn over the field corridors - so at least that's the vernacular. However, intensively managed fields have led to drastic declines in many regions of Central Europe. Only a more conscious use of nature can counteract this development, which is what the EUROPA brand 2019 wants to draw attention to.
