The formerly close connection between the economic sectors of glass and coal and their significance for Styria were the focus of the Styrian national exhibition in 1988. The first detailed news about a coal mine in Styria dates back to the seventies of the seventeenth century. But only in the course of the industrial use of hard coal in the middle of the 19th century, this energy carrier prevailed in Styria. In 1856, 220,000 tons of coal were already mined in Styria. This development also had a direct influence on the glassworks, the sites of glass production. They migrated from the deep forests of the Koralpe into the valley. The first glassworks that used the new fuel was located in Oberndorf / Bärnbach since 1805.
