After 25 years of reign, the controversy over the salt trade - which was the source of Salzburg's wealth - flared up again and again with Bavaria. With the military invasion of the prince specimen of Berchtesgaden in the fall of 1611, the archbishop tried in vain to wrest the local salt production from the Bavarian Duke Maximilian. Maximilian sent in the episode an army against Salzburg and defeated Wolf-Dietrich. On the run, the Prince-Archbishop was seized by Bavarian troops on Carinthian soil and initially placed on the Hohenwerfen Fortress, then on Hohensalzburg in imprisonment. On January 16, 1617, the sovereign died and found his last rest in the Gabrielskapelle, which he especially designed as a burial ground.
