IX. Congress of the International Federation of Resistance Fighters 1982 IX. Congress of the International Federation of Resistance Fighters 1982 in Berlin, capital of the GDR, the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications of the German Democratic Republic issued a multicolored special postage stamp. Special cancellation from 7th September to 6th November 1982 IX. Congress of the International Federation of Resistance Fighters (FIR), September 1982 in Berlin, capital of the GDR The FIR has existed for 31 years. The founding congress, in which resistance fighters and victims of fascism from 18 European countries took part, took place from 30 June to 3 July 1951 in Vienna. They were people of various political, religious and philosophical directions. At present, the FIR comprises 65 national associations from 23 European countries, Israel and West Berlin, representing millions of former resistance fighters and victims of fascism. True to the oath of the survivors of Buchenwald and other former fascist extermination camps, the Federation of Resistance fighters has, since its inception, acted in the interest of defending the peace and cooperation of the peoples. It leads a ceaseless struggle against the re-emergence of fascism, against all manifestations of neo-fascism, against arms race and nuclear threat to humanity according to the content of the Charter of the United Nations. Together with the international organizations of former combatants, it raised its demands for peacekeeping and disarmament at the World Meeting on Disarmament in Rome in 1979 and at other significant meetings and congresses. The FIR is a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) with the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations with consultative status II, represented by UNESCO in Category B and actively participates in the work of the Disarmament Committee and in the special committees of the ONG in Geneva. The Congress is the highest organ of the FIR, which elects the leading functionaries, confirms the members appointed by the national associations and commits the tasks of the Federation. In September 1982, the congress meets for the first time in Berlin, capital of the GDR.
