On the occasion of the International Year of Education 1971, the Deutsche Bundespost issued on 12 November 1970 a special postal stamp, which is also dedicated to the 300th anniversary of the death of the Czech clergyman and pedagogue Johann Amos Comenius. Comenius was born on March 23, 1592 in Nivnice, Eastern Moravia. In 1632 he became Bishop of the Bohemian Brethren in Lissa (Poland). Comenius called for a school education up to the age of 24 years. His works (for example, Didactia Magna, 1632, or Orbis pictus, 1658) were intended to serve the realization of the kingdom of God on earth. Comenius died on November 15, 1670 in Amsterdam.
