Fort de Breendonk memorial in Belgium Fort Breendonk in Belgium was converted by the SS into a concentration camp during the Second World War. In commemoration of the victims of Breendonk, in honor of the steadfast patriots and as a reminder to the living, the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications of the German Democratic Republic issued a special postage stamp with the image of the memorial in the National Memorial Fort de Breendonk in Belgium. In Memory of the Victims of Fascism In September 1944, Belgium was freed from the Hitlerite-fascist occupation. At the insistence of the Belgian resistance fighters and anti-fascists, a commission was formed in December 1944 by the Belgian government to objectively investigate the war crimes committed in Belgium during the occupation. Especially the former Fort de Breendonk had become, with the day of the conversion into a concentration camp of the SS, the place of the most disgusting bestialities. The commission consisted of former ministers Jacques Basyn and Antoine Delfosse, professors Fernand Dehousse, Pierre Graux, Léon van der Essen and the representative of the general auditor, Alfred Wauters. On the basis of these investigations, Parliament decided in August 1947 to create the National Memorial of Fort de Breendonk. The Memorial of the Fort de Breendonk National Memorial states: "The National Memorial of Fort de Breendonk has a difficult task to fulfill: to cherish the memory of painful and great events, to keep the best Belgians constantly honored, and to the young generation to give the opportunity to use these events as an occasion to perform their patriotic duty without error. " It highlights that most of the victims in the Breendonk concentration camp, regardless of their nationality, did not give up their will to resist. With the present special postage stamp "Memorial Fort de Breendonk Belgium", the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications of the German Democratic Republic continues the series of commemorative issues for International Remembrance and Memorial Sites and the heroes of the anti-fascist resistance struggle.
