Historical Memorials in Weimar The Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications of the German Democratic Republic publishes six multi-colored special postal stamps on historical memorials in Weimar. 35 Pfennig value: Cranachhaus The two similar Renaissance houses on the east side of the market were built in 1547/49 by the Weimar architect Nicol Gromann, the left for the chancellor Christian Brück, Lucas Cranach's son-in-law. As Lucas Cranach d. Ä. (1472 - 1553), Mayor of Wittenberg, returned from captivity after the Battle of Mühlberg, he took up residence in this house. On the third floor he had his painting room, where he began to paint on the large altarpiece for the town church and where he died at the age of eighty. Above the entrance next to the Brück coat of arms is also the Cranach with the winged snake. The colorful architectural parts of the façade are good evidence of the early Renaissance.
