Building of the German Post 5O Pfennig value: Main Post Office Berlin-Marzahn In the social center of the new district Berlin-Marzahn is the main post office. Modern socialist lifestyle is reflected in the design and architecture of the building. Clear contours, compact building form and the largely natural lighting and ventilation of the rooms are features of a purposeful and economical construction. As general contractor for the project planning as well as for the construction work, the VEB BMK Ingenieurhochbau Berlin was responsible. Commissioning took place in April 1986. In addition to supplying the postal customers of the catchment area, the Office assumes the function of handling and distribution for a total of 19 affiliated receiving offices. The delivery of the mail is done in a closed post office. From there, the shipments go directly to the service rooms on the ground floor, where they are further processed with mechanized systems. The customers enter the house via a porch in which the self-service post office, various vending machines, telephone booths, the small goods reception and issue, lockers and showcases are arranged. The centerpiece of the four-storey building is the atrium into which the generously designed lobby is arranged. The natural lighting and ventilation of the ticket hall is ensured by diagonally arranged skylight windows. Canteen areas and our own company doctor ensure exemplary social support of the operating staff.
