Dams in the GDR, built after 1945 The Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications of the German Democratic Republic publishes four multicolored special postage stamps depicting dams built in the GDR after 1945. Dams in the GDR 5 Pfennig value: Spremberg dam The Spremberg dam is the first storage facility for a storage system in the area of the upper Spree. The dam, which was put into operation in 1965, fulfills the following tasks and functions: - Flood protection for the national economy, in particular for the Spreewald, - Increasing the low water supply of the Spree to continuously cover the water needs of the below-barrier industry and the agricultural and Fisheries, but in particular to safeguard the industrial water demand of the large-scale power plants Lübbenau and Vetschau, - production of electric energy, - recreational area for the coal and energy center. The most important technical data: Total storage space: 43 million cubic meters of the reservoir at Höchststau: 9.6 square kilometers Length of the dam (Erddamm): 3.7 km Cubature of the dam: 1.1 million cubic meters of hydroelectric power plant with a maximum output of 1 MW.
