Dams in the GDR, built after 1945 The Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications of the German Democratic Republic publishes four multicolored special postage stamps depicting dams built in the GDR after 1945. Dams in the GDR 15 Pfennig value: Ohratalsperre On the northern slope of the Thuringian Forest, about 7 km north of Oberhof in the district of Gotha, the Ohratalsperre was built immediately below the confluence of Kernwasser and Silberbach to Ohrabach and 1965 put into operation. It represents the most important construction phase of the major water management measure "Fernwasserversorgung Nordthüringen", which is planned to improve the water supply of the water-deficient Thuringian Basin between the Harz and the Thuringian Forest. The Ohratalsperre supplies the areas of Arnstadt, Erfurt, Weimar and Jena as well as Gotha, Langensalza and Mühlhausen with high-quality drinking water and covers the ever-increasing demand for water. The main barrier and the two Vorsperren were the first of their kind in the GDR as Steinschüttdämme been built. This dam construction fits in well with the image of the low mountain landscape. The main dam has a height of 56 m and a cubic capacity of 950,000 cubic meters. The crown length is 260 m. The seal of Absperrbauwerkes is achieved by a about 25 cm thick, water-side on the 1: 2 inclined dam surface applied multi-layer bituminous sealing skin. The congestion is 17.2 million cubic meters with a storage area of 88 ha and a maximum storage length of 2.7 km. This impressive water management system is also used for the popular recreation.
