Schmidt, who was born on October 22, 1825 in Frickenhofen in Wurttemberg, is one of Vienna's four "building macaroons". The others were Ferstel, Hansen and Hasenauer. He began as a simple stonemason in the Cologne Dombauhütte and was in the age of Neo-Gothic soon a much sought after man by the knowledge that he acquired in the course of this work. In 1857 he was appointed professor of the time still under Austrian administration standing Milan Academy. Due to the loss of Lombardy in 1859 he was transferred to the Vienna Academy. There he worked until his death on 23 January 1891, and influenced so significantly a few generations of "Gothic", who were his students. He built the Vienna City Hall, which earned him in 1889 the baron and honorary citizenship of the city of Vienna. Many churches are also his work, such as the Lazaristenkirche, the Weinhauserkirche or the Fünfhauser church "Maria vom Siege". He was president of the Künstlerhaus in 1887 and 1888 and decisively influenced the building philosophy of his time.
