The portrait of sculptor Carl Kundmann decorates this stamp of the special stamp series. He was born in Vienna on June 15, 1838, came to the Academy of Arts at the age of fifteen to train in sculpture, and completed his studies with the Dresden sculptor Ernst Hänel, who was highly esteemed at that time in Vienna. A stay abroad in Italy (1865-67) gave his artistic hand the finishing touch. In 1872 he won the first prize in the competition for the Schubert monument in the Vienna City Park. In the same year he was awarded the professorship at the Academy, which he held until 1909. His most famous works are the Tegetthoff monument on the Praterstern (1886), the seated figure at the Grillparzer monument in the Volksgarten (1889) and the statue of the Pallas Athena at the Parliament fountain (1902). He died on June 9, 1919 in Vienna.
