William Unger, to whom this brand is dedicated, has made a great contribution to the upswing in Austrian graphic arts, even though he himself was not a native Austrian. When the artist, who was born in Hanover on September 11, 1837, was invited by the Vienna "Society for Duplicating Arts" to make a number of etchings, he already had a good reputation as a graphic artist in Germany. He came to Vienna in 1872, was appointed professor of etchings in 1881 to the School of Applied Arts and in 1894 in the same capacity to the Academy. There he was able to pass on the essence of reproducing and self-creative etching for two generations. His work includes more than 800 etchings. His life was spent in Innsbruck, where he died on March 5, 1932.
