Lviv is the capital of the homonymous region with a population of 2.6 million and an area of 21,800 square meters. 830,000 people live in the city of Lviv itself. Like a real "diamond" of Eastern Europe, Lviv is reminiscent of an open-air museum housing 2,000 historical, architectural and cultural monuments. The city was founded in 1256 by Prince Danylo Halytskyj and named after his son Lew. Lviv soon became a commercial and economic center of the region. The geographic location and natural resources attracted strangers: Tatars, German Hungarians, Poles, Latvians, Austrians and Swedes. Over the centuries, they brought their culture, tradition and religion into the city - there are buildings here that bear traces of Gothic, Baroque, Renaissance and Romanesque styles, Rococo and Empire, as well as contemporary architecture. The old Lviv is above all the historical marketplace as the center of social, economic and cultural life. For six centuries, Lviv's history was inextricably linked with this comparatively small, almost square, 142 x 129 m square. Here was the town hall, palaces and houses of respected citizens, here one traded here trade, judgments were made and executed executions. The marketplace witnessed the most important events in this city, beginning with the granting of the "Magdeburg Law" for Lviv. Despite its massive shape, the town hall blends organically into the architectural ensemble of Lviv and its tower became a symbol of the city. The entrance to the town hall is guarded by two stone lions bearing signs bearing the city's coat of arms. The basis of the city's coat of arms is the seal of the Galician princes. On the coat of arms the city gate with towers is to be seen, which testify of the strong defensive readiness Lemberg; the city gate is open - as a token of the hospitality of its citizens, in front of uninvited guests the city gate is guarded by a lion.Today Lviv is a treasury of national ideas and culture, an economic, scientific and cultural center of western Ukraine. In the city there are many museums, galleries, theaters and music groups. There are twelve universities in Lviv; The city has a legitimate reputation for a high level of education. Right here is one of the oldest Central European universities.
