An art council, consisting of the members Max Reinhardt, Franz Schalk, Richard Strauss, Hugo von Hofmannsthal and Adolf Roller, set the idea for the Salzburg Festival. The opening took place on August 22, 1920 on the cathedral square with a performance by Hugo von Hofmannsthal's "Jedermann" directed by Max Reinhardt. Over time, the music gained more and more weight. Already in 1921 there were numerous concerts and in 1922 four Mozart operas were performed. Of the 1843 performances of the musical theater staged up to and including 1994, 936 were the works of Mozart. There were a total of 1381 plays, of which 425 of the "Everyman". The "Kleine Festspielhaus" was planned by the Salzburg architects Hans Hofmann and Erich Engels and opened in 1963. It has 1324 seats and 60 standing places. The Baroque Felsenreitschule was incorporated into the festival in 1926 by Reinhardt. In 1948, Herbert von Karajan directed Gluck's opera "Orpheus and Eurydice" for the first time here. The "Great Festival House" was opened in 1960 by Karajan. Since 1992, the abandoned brewhouse on the Pernerinsel near Hallein has also been included in the festival.
