On September 15, 1874, representatives from 22 states gathered in the Ständehaus zu Bern to found a general postal union. Apart from European countries, Egypt and the United States of America were also involved. The basis for negotiation was a draft consisting of 14 articles, which in its essential points was based on the Austro-German postal treaty of 1850. The contract, which could be completed after intensive negotiations already on 9 October 1874, referred however initially only to the correspondence. Many congresses in the following decades extended the scope of the agreements and more and more states joined the Universal Postal Union. The club covered 1949 an area of 132 million km2 with about 2,080 million inhabitants. The brand image of the present brand shows a posthorn, the symbol of the "post" in general, while the years 1874 and 1949 indicate the founding and anniversary year. The stylized roses stand for the blossoming of the Universal Postal Union.
