On the 26th of August, 1978, the 700th anniversary of the anniversary of the fate of Austria in 1278 for the next centuries was celebrated. The Marchfeld battle of 26 August 1278 shifted the emphasis in Central Europe from Bohemia and Prague to Austria and Vienna. The commemoration of this turning point of world historical significance gave rise to a national exhibition in Lower Austria in Jedenspeigen and the issue of this special postage stamp. In this memorable military conflict on the battlefield of Dürnkrut and Jedenspeigen the Bohemian King Ottokar II was defeated by Rudolf of Habsburg and he himself killed. In the style of high medieval equestrian pictures, the brand motif depicts King Ottokar of Bohemia coming from the left. He wears the helmet of the Kingdom of Bohemia on his pot helmet. The Bohemian silver lion on a red background can be seen on banner, tunic and horse blanket. On the right is King Rudolf of Habsburg. He wears a crowned pot helmet. His shield, the tunic, the horse blanket and the banner are adorned with the black and red imperial eagle on a golden background. This depiction is intended to symbolize the opponents of the Marchfeld battle, whose direct encounter on the battlefield, however, did not take place. The model for this graphic design were miniatures of this time and the great equestrian seal of King Ottokar.
