Rudolf Kirchschläger was born on March 20, 1915 in Niederkappel. After graduation, he began to study at the Faculty of Law and Political Science of the University of Vienna. With the seizure of power by the National Socialists, he had to cancel his studies and was drafted on December 1, 1938 to the Wehrmacht. In the course of a prolonged vacation in 1940, however, he was able to complete his studies as a doctor of law. After the war, he became a judge and changed in 1953 in the Foreign Office in Vienna. In 1956, Regional Judge Dr. Kirchschläger entrusted the direction of the International Law Department. From 1962 to 1967 he was Deputy Secretary General of the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which has since been dissolved by the Federal Chancellery. From 1970, Dr. Kirchschläger Minister for Foreign Affairs. After the death of Federal President Franz Jonas on April 24, 1974, the Austrian Socialist Party proposed Rudolf Kirchschläger as candidates for the office of Federal President. In the Federal President election on June 23, 1974, he was elected Federal President of the Republic of Austria. After his renewed candidacy in 1980, he was confirmed for a second term by the voters.
